Choosing an Instrument
With so many instrument choices available, the process of choosing an instrument can be overwhelming.
If you already feel a pull towards a certain type of music (as most of us do), I would start there. Ask yourself why you like the types of music you do. What types of instruments are used? What specifically do you like about the style?
Next, listen to all different instruments. Instruments have such vastly different sounds--again, which sound are you drawn to? Listening gives you the chance to think about your goals and how you would like to sound on your instrument one day. It’s really important not to focus on the technique that musicians you are listening to have. You will get there someday, with dedication, focus, and help from an awesome teacher.
If you are interested in a wind instrument, it’s crucial to try out the mouthpieces to ensure that you are physically able to make a sound. Physical characteristics, such as the shape of your lips or the length of your arms can make it possible to play some instruments but not others. A qualified teacher will be able to assess your potential on different instruments and make recommendations. This is an essential step before jumping into a rental agreement or purchasing an instrument.
Once you have narrowed down your options, it’s time to obtain the instrument and get started with learning! This may seem like a lot of work, but putting time and thought into choosing an instrument will ensure that you stay committed and driven as you learn your instrument. The purchase of an instrument is an investment that can potentially last your whole life!
Below are links to videos of different instruments if you need a place to start. Remember, there are tons of styles out there for all the instruments-this list is just a starting point.
