The student side of online lessons

Just as a teacher normally sets up a learning environment, a student taking lessons online will need to gather some materials in order to ensure a smooth lesson.  If a student can prepare their learning space before the lesson, lesson time is maximized.

  • A chair that will enable proper posture

    • I use a chair without arms whenever I can, such as a dining room chair or living room accent chair.  This makes it possible to move your arms and legs to comfortably support your instrument.  It also ensures that you can sit up straight for proper breathing.

  • A music stand

    • The music stand should be set up right next to the computer, tablet, or phone that the student is using for the video chat.  Even better, a phone or tablet can sit right on the stand.

  • A table or desk next to the music stand

    • This is best if the student is using a computer.

  • The charger for your device

    • It’s always good to have around just in case your battery gets low during the lesson.

  • A pencil

    • The teacher is going to be telling the student many specific details about his/her music.  The student is going to be responsible for writing notes in his/her music at home.  Having a pencil (not a pen) close by is a must.

  • All books/songs/written assignments

    • In order to have minimal wasted lesson time, the student should make sure all assignments are close at hand so he/she can grab them quickly during the lesson.

  • A metronome

    • I also always have a metronome, so if my students don’t have one, I am able to give them tempos.  However, video chat can be unpredictable.  Sometimes a metronome click can be altered and not consistent.  It’s best if the student has a metronome to work with at his/her home.

  • A notebook

    • Some students like to keep track of their assignments on their own.  I always update assignments in the online portal at the end of each lesson.  But if you prefer to keep your own running record of assignments, a notebook is very helpful.

Of course, on top of this list, a student must have an instrument and accessories needed to play the instrument.  Creating a lesson space at home where distractions are limited and everything you need is close by will guarantee a great lesson experience!
